Catrike Dumont

Catrike’s 16 years of engineering and experience have come together to create the Dumont. The rear suspension features a highly progressive travel path combined with a custom spring rate and sophisticated damping for a perfect balance of performance and comfort. The shock is actuated via a CNC machined swingarm pivoting on precision cartridge bearings to allow the suspension system to operate with seamless efficiency. Up front, the Dumont employs Catrike’s anti-dive patent-pending front suspension spindle to take the edge off while allowing all wheels to move independently. The result is that the Dumont stays firmly planted on the ground with the active suspension. The long and low rider position and fully adjustable boom provide stable weight distribution needed for maximum performance while the ergonomic backrest is fully adjustable for the perfect fit. A 26-inch rear wheel and folding feature, round out the Dumont to provide the ultimate ride.

This is a continuation of the previous review. Perhaps the biggest adjustment though is the riding speed. While I rode my DF for exercise and recreation I was able to average around 14 mph on most outings. With the Dumont over the 1000 miles I averaged 11.6 mph - A LOT of folks passed me this year. Ok, what's this all about? I'm 68, and don't plan any late life Olympic competitions. I ride for exercise and fun, and that's exactly what the trike does for me! I'm enjoying the experience - pain free. It's just plain FUN! Let's talk safety. YES I feel safe, or as safe as I felt riding a DF with today's whacky drivers. Now I have LEDs front and rear, a third party (Purple Sky) flag, Loud Horn electric horn, and I always wear a bright upper body color. Do the drivers see me, oh you bet they do! My wife who rides her DF with me can't believe the room drivers give me (us). We think they don't want to hit the "cripple" - they don't know what I am. But as with any on road cycling, you have to always be alert and we do pick routes that are more "trike friendly". In summary if you're interested in riding with comfort in mind, you owe it to yourself to make a trip to Turners Falls and take a test ride on any of Dave's in stock trikes. While the Dumont's price point may not be in reach for some, he has other models as well. I just didn't want to be in a position to "upgrade" in a year or two and ultimately spend more in the long run. I think you do get good value with the Catrike brand.

    Quite a Rig!

    By RICK

    from Berwick, Maine

    About Me

I went to Basically Bicycle (from southern Maine) in May of last year looking for a car rack for my LWB Rans. While I didn't find a rack, I did get a chance to try a few recumbent trikes - I didn't even know what a trike was! WOW was I impressed with the comfort and stability over the Rans recumbent. As these rigs aren't cheap, I went away to do more research. After several weeks of forum research and taking some pointers from Dave at Basically Bicycle I decided to jump head first into the Catrike top-of-the-line Dumont. Now (Jan 18) with 1000+ miles on this marvelous machine I feel I can do a decent report on how its gone. First, can't say enough about Dave's operation in Turners Falls. While the shop is small, the wealth of knowledge inside is large. Dave got my order processed in no time as he didn't have the Lava Red in stock. I've read and learned a lot during these 6 months and some of the horror stories about folks taking delivery and not having their trike set-up properly are disconcerting. Well Dave knows trikes and how to set them up so you'll have the best ride possible. I have virtually no wear on my tires and that is directly related to his tuning the front suspension before delivery. Now the ride: Having been a DF cyclist all my life, the trike learning curve is short - and COMFORTABLE. Hence the main reason for "going trike", the comfort. The upright riding position, wrist rests, full suspension, and rugged build all make the Catrike Dumont a joy to ride. Gone are the wrist, neck, lower back and above all, BUTT aches so common with riding a DF bike. Yes, you do use different leg muscles and it took me a good month to build up those muscles to where they no long were sore after a ride. Make no mistake, you will work riding a trike. While the downhills are a roller coaster joy, the uphills are work but isn't that one reason we ride - exercise. WILL HAVE TO CONTINUE ON A 2ND POST AS THERE'S A WORD LIMIT...
